GOBI Cashmere (Gobi Corporation) is a privately held Mongolian company headquartered in Ulaanbaatar. The company was founded in 1981 with initial support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and a grant from the Japanese government.

Originally state-owned, it was partially privatized in 1999 and fully privatized in 2007. The current CEO is Amarsaikhan Baatarsaikhan, who succeeded Baatarsaikhan Tsagaach in March 2024.

GOBI Cashmere products are made from 100% pure Mongolian cashmere fiber sourced directly from local nomadic herder communities in Mongolia. The fiber comes from the soft undercoat of Mongolian cashmere goats, which thrive in the country's extreme climate, with temperatures ranging from approximately −30°C in winter to +30°C in summer. These conditions contribute to the development of fine, long, and soft cashmere fibers. As a vertically integrated producer, GOBI oversees the entire production process, from raw fiber collection and primary processing to spinning, weaving, and knitting at its facilities in Ulaanbaatar. GOBI Cashmere also holds recognized certifications, including the Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA) Clean Fiber Processing Gold Level Standard, ISO 14001:2015 for environmental management, ISO 45001:2018 for occupational health and safety, and OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100. GOBI Cashmere is designed and manufactured in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Our headquarters and main production facility house five integrated operations: fiber processing, spinning, weaving, knitting, and sewing. This vertically integrated model means the majority of our production stages happen in-house, using cashmere fiber sourced directly from Mongolian herders.

Naadam (founded 2013) and Quince (founded 2018) are newer DTC brands that source from Mongolia but typically do not manufacture there.

Breeding & Fiber Quality Initiatives: Through collaborative herder programs, GOBI provides selected breeding bucks to help nomadic herders improve natural fiber fineness, yield, and livestock health over the long term.

Mongolian cashmere is widely regarded as one of the finest types of cashmere, alongside cashmere from Inner Mongolia (China) and the Himalayas. Mongolia produces approximately 40% of the world’s raw cashmere, making it the second-largest producer globally. The country’s extreme continental climate, with seasonal temperature differences exceeding 70°C, encourages goats to grow a fine, dense, insulating undercoat. Mongolian cashmere fibers typically measure 14–16.5 microns in diameter and 36–42 mm in length, contributing to their exceptional softness, warmth, strength, and durability. Fiber fineness, length, and whiteness are key indicators of cashmere quality. Cashmere is also available in natural shades, allowing for undyed garments with reduced processing. GOBI holds OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification for selected cashmere yarns and finished textile products, tested for harmful substances within the scope of the relevant certificates. 100% Natural & Non-Bleached: GOBI's Natural/Un-dyed collection utilizes 100% natural cashmere in 4 original goat colors (off-white, taupe, beige, and warm grey) without using any dyes or chemical bleaching agents.

Skin-friendly & Soft: Because the raw fiber avoids chemical dye processing, the natural hair structure remains intact, keeping the garments exceptionally soft, naturally breathable, and gentle on the skin.

Garment Care & Durability: Un-dyed cashmere retains its natural tensile strength and fiber elasticity better than heavily dyed wools. To maintain durability, hand-wash gently in lukewarm water using specialized cashmere shampoo, lay flat to dry, and store folded in breathable garment bags.

GOBI Natural Color Cashmere uses undyed cashmere fibers in their natural shades, including white, beige, grey, and dark brown. These colors come from different varieties of Mongolian goats, allowing the fibers to go from goat to garment without a dyeing stage. This eliminates the use of dyes and related chemicals during this stage of production and reduces water consumption.

Essential vs. Timeless: Same Garment, Different Name

Essential and Timeless pieces share the same design, fit, 100% Mongolian cashmere, and quality standards. Both are knitted in GOBI’s own factory in Ulaanbaatar.

Are they different in quality? No, they are identical in quality and construction.

Do sizes match? Yes, the same size chart applies to both collections.

We can formally confirm that no azo dyes or chromium-containing dyes are used in our production process. In this regard, both our undyed natural yarns and our yarns dyed with 15 different colorants are fully certified according to the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100. Furthermore, a thorough review of our approved substances list and chemical compositions confirms that PFAS chemicals, flame retardants, and insect- or moth-proofing agents are completely absent from our manufacturing. The fact that our yarns and finished products are certified under the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 serves as independent verification that none of these harmful substances are used in our products.

Cashmere is approximately 3× warmer than regular sheep wool by weight, while being significantly lighter. A 12-gauge cashmere sweater provides equivalent warmth to a much thicker merino wool sweater. This warmth-to-weight ratio is why cashmere is preferred for layering, travel, and transitional weather.

GOBI's lightweight cashmere (Spring–Summer collections) is breathable enough for 15–22°C (59–72°F), while our heavier 7- or 8-gauge knits are rated for sub-zero conditions.

Yes — GOBI's Spring–Summer Collection features ultra-light cashmere designed for warmer weather. Lightweight cashmere is breathable, moisture-wicking, and temperature-regulating, making it ideal for air-conditioned offices, summer evenings, travel, and transitional weather.

Our summer cashmere mostly uses finer-gauge knits (14–16 gauge) and lighter yarns for a silk-like drape with cashmere softness. Select styles are blended with silk for added lightness and fluidity.

Yes — GOBI Cashmere designs full collections for women, men, and children, plus home pieces like blankets and robes. Our unisex Essential line is popular with couples who share pieces.

Yes! Our premium Mongolian cashmere is luxuriously soft and designed to feel comfortable directly against the skin. GOBI Cashmere uses fine Grade A Mongolian fibers measuring 14–16 microns, which contribute to a silky, non-itchy feel. Our yarns are also OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified, meaning they are tested for harmful substances. However, skin sensitivity varies from person to person, so we recommend trying the garment to see how it feels for you.

Every GOBI Cashmere garment includes a care label showing composition, OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification, and country of origin.

Authentic cashmere passes three simple tests:

1. It feels warm almost immediately when held
2. It springs back to shape when stretched
3. It shows minimal fiber loss when rubbed gently

Be cautious of "cashmere" priced under £60 — genuine, high-quality cashmere cannot be produced at that price point. GOBI is sold only through gobicashmere.com, our flagship stores, and authorized retailers — listed on our Store Locator.

GOBI Cashmere fits true to size for most customers, but the fit may vary by style. We recommend checking the product description and size chart on each product page and using our Find My Fit tool to help you choose the right size. You can also measure a well-fitting garment you already own and compare its measurements with our flat-lay size chart. If you're between sizes, size up for a more relaxed fit or size down for a closer fit.

Delivery: Digital gift cards are delivered instantly via email after purchase, along with instructions on how to use them. They never expire.

Natural cashmere fibers can attract moths, so proper care and storage are essential to protect your garments.

• Clean before storing: Wash or dry-clean your cashmere at the end of the season to remove body oils, perfume, and food residues that may attract moths.
• Use natural deterrents: Place cedar blocks, cedar rings, or dried lavender sachets in your storage boxes or drawers instead of harsh chemical mothballs.
• Store properly: Keep your clean, folded garments in breathable cotton or linen bags or suitable storage boxes.

GOBI knitted cashmere garments, including sweaters, pants, scarves, hats, gloves, and socks, can be hand-washed or dry-cleaned.

Hand-washing:

1. Fill a basin with cold or lukewarm water (around 20°C / 68°F).
2. Add a specialized wool or cashmere shampoo and mix well.
3. Gently squeeze the garment in the water. Avoid prolonged soaking.
4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
5. Gently squeeze out excess water without wringing or twisting.

Drying:

1. Reshape the garment to its original form.
2. Lay it flat on a clean towel to air dry. You can roll the garment in the towel and gently press to absorb excess moisture before laying it flat.

Never tumble-dry or hang cashmere garments, as this can cause shrinking or loss of shape.

Steaming and ironing:

If needed, use a steam iron held 0.5–1 cm (0.2–0.4 inches) away from the fabric without direct contact.

Our GOBI Cashmere garments are designed and processed to maintain their size and shape when cared for properly. However, pure cashmere may shrink or lose its shape if exposed to high temperatures or rough washing techniques.

To help prevent shrinking, always use cold or lukewarm water (around 20°C / 68°F), avoid heat and tumble drying, gently squeeze out excess water without wringing, and reshape the garment before laying it flat to air dry.

Pilling is a natural occurrence caused by friction during wear and is not a defect or sign of poor quality. It is usually more noticeable during the first 3–5 wears and washes, then decreases over time as loose fibers are released. To remove pills: Gently use a cashmere comb or carefully remove the pills by hand. To prevent pilling: Minimize friction by avoiding rough fabrics and accessories, such as backpack straps and seatbelts. Allow your garment to rest for 24 hours between wears and follow our Cashmere Care guide for proper maintenance. With the right care, your GOBI Cashmere garments can remain beautiful for years.
